Dating in Accra: first-date neighbourhoods, trotros and ride-hailing, daytime outings, fake profiles, safety, Belgian visas via Switzerland and family.

1Dating in Accra: What Sets the Capital Apart

Dating in Accra moves at the pace of a capital stretched along the Atlantic, caught between traffic jams and close-knit neighbourhood life. The city draws students from every region, office workers, Makola traders and civil servants. You will also meet expats, as well as members of the diaspora who have come back from Europe or North America. So everyone arrives with their own habits and expectations.

Our guide to dating in Ghana covers the whole country. Here, however, we stay in Accra, neighbourhood by neighbourhood, from the seafront up to Legon. This guide is mainly for singles who live in the city or spend a few months there. It also helps Ghanaians abroad who fly home for Christmas, and Europeans already talking to someone from Accra.

Ga is the city's historic language, but English and Twi rule the streets. Among younger people, Ghanaian Pidgin also slips into messages. In every case, dating in Accra works best with clarity. Say early on what you are looking for: a serious relationship, marriage, or friendship first. Then judge each person by their actions, not by their neighbourhood or their accent.

2Your First Date: Which Part of Accra to Choose?

For a first date, choose a busy public place that is easy for both of you to reach. A café, a restaurant or a terrace in a shopping mall all work well. However, turn down a private home, a hotel room or an empty beach, even if the other person insists. Dating in Accra starts better when each of you can leave freely.

Osu is still the place for a night out, with restaurants and bars in the streets around Oxford Street. Next door, Labone and Cantonments have quieter cafés where you can talk without shouting. To the north-east, East Legon attracts University of Ghana students and young professionals, and the A&C Mall makes an easy landmark. Finally, Airport City suits people who work in the offices nearby, and the Marina Mall is there too.

Above all, look at the map. Crossing from East Legon to Osu at rush hour can take a long time, and the Belgian FPS Foreign Affairs also mentions this congestion. So pick an area close to both of you, or one that one of you already knows. Then give a precise landmark: a petrol station, a bank or the main entrance of a mall.

3Trotros, Taxis and Ride-Hailing: Getting to Your Date

In Accra, the trotro, a minibus with often improvised stops, carries a large share of the city's commuters. Yet the Belgian FPS Foreign Affairs advises avoiding private minibuses, which are often old and badly driven. It also advises against walking or taking a taxi at night in Greater Accra. For a date, then, a safe journey matters as much as the venue.

In practice, many city dwellers book rides through apps such as Uber, Bolt or Yango. The app shows the driver's name, the number plate and the route, which you can share with a friend. Still, check the plate before you get in. If you hail a taxi on the street during the day, agree on the fare before you set off.

Timing matters too. A weekday lunch or a Saturday afternoon avoids both the night and the worst of the evening traffic. Also, in the rainy season a heavy downpour can block some roads, so leave a margin. That way, dating in Accra does not end with a long wait by a dark roadside.

4Daytime Outings: Crafts, Gardens and the Seafront

A daytime date often reassures both people. The Centre for National Culture, near the seafront, brings together craftspeople selling woodwork, fabric and beads. Browsing the stalls gives you an easy topic of conversation. Close by, the National Theatre, with its unmistakable architecture, also stages performances.

For somewhere calmer, the Legon Botanical Garden, on the university campus, is ideal for a walk under the trees. Further out, about an hour's drive depending on traffic, the Aburi Botanical Gardens look down on the city from the hills. Such a trip calls for more trust, so save it for a second or third date.

Born in Jamestown in 2011, the Chale Wote street art festival takes place in August, according to the Ghana News Agency; the venue changes from one edition to the next. However, the FPS advises against walking or taking a taxi at night in Jamestown, as in Nima. So go during the day, in a group, and leave before dark. As for Labadi, the beach is lively at weekends. Even so, the FPS reports several violent robberies on beaches, notably at Kokrobite. So dating in Accra by the water belongs in broad daylight, where there are plenty of people.

5Online Dating in Accra: Moderated Site or WhatsApp Groups?

Online, dating in Accra starts with an honest profile. Choose recent photos that clearly show your face. Mention your neighbourhood, what you are looking for and the languages you speak. For example: “I work in Ridge, I live in Dzorwulu and I'm looking for something serious.” Then, after a few regular exchanges, suggest a video call.

WhatsApp, Telegram or Facebook singles groups look like a handy shortcut. You join through a link, then start chatting. However, your number or account becomes visible to strangers, and nobody checks the profiles. Your photos can also circulate far beyond the group.

A moderated site does not remove every risk, but it adds safeguards. On Koeur24, every photo goes through an automatic check and then a manual review. You can block or report a profile. Also, identity verification is optional, but it gives a “Verified identity” badge. Finally, distance, age and religion filters help you find people nearby, from Tema to Kasoa. Messaging and audio or video calls stay inside the app, so you only share your number once trust has grown.

6Safe Dating in Accra: Good Habits to Adopt

The Belgian FPS Foreign Affairs notes that crime is present in Accra and the surrounding area. It reports bag snatching, sometimes violent, in the shopping streets near Kotoka airport and in residential areas. It also mentions several kidnappings for ransom in the country's large cities. So a stranger who insists on hosting you at home, or on taking you somewhere else, should set off alarm bells.

The FPS also lists fake profiles on dating sites and social media, as well as fake police officers on the road. When it comes to money, there are no exceptions. Never send money, airtime or an MTN MoMo, Telecel Cash or AT Money transfer to someone you have not met. To report online fraud, Ghana's Cyber Security Authority has a form on its website, as well as 292 by call or text. Keep your screenshots, then block and report the profile.

Before dating in Accra, also tell someone close the person's first name, their profile, the place and when you expect to be home.

  • Meet in a busy public place, ideally during the day
  • Avoid walking or taking a taxi at night, especially in Nima and Jamestown
  • Book a ride through an app and share your trip
  • Keep your drink, your bag and your phone close to you
  • Refuse any request for money or mobile money, however small

7Accra and Europe: Long-Distance Love and Visas

Dating in Accra can also begin from Brussels, London or Amsterdam. A long-distance relationship then depends on routine: video calls at set times, concrete plans, visits you prepare together. Accra runs on Greenwich Mean Time all year round. So there is no time difference with London in winter and one hour in summer; with Brussels, it is one hour in winter and two in summer. The FPS also notes that Brussels Airlines serves Kotoka airport, 10 km from the city.

For a short stay in Belgium, a Ghana resident does not apply to Belgium directly. According to the Belgian embassy in Abidjan, which covers Ghana, Belgium is represented by Switzerland in Accra. The application therefore goes through VFS Global, the Swiss embassy's service provider. For a long stay, however, you apply in Abidjan. Indeed, the Belgian honorary consulate in East Legon does not issue visas.

So be wary of someone you have never met who asks for money for “the visa” or “the ticket”. A real application requires the applicant to attend in person for fingerprints. Rules change, so always check the embassy's website and the Belgian Immigration Office. In the other direction, if you travel from Belgium, register your trip on Travellers Online.

8Introducing Someone to Your Family, Accra Style

In Accra, many families are spread between the capital, a home town and abroad. A mother may live in Kumasi, a brother in London, an aunt in Tema. So an introduction often happens in stages: a meal with an elder who lives in the city, then a video call with the rest of the family. Simply ask your partner how things work in their family.

For returnees from the diaspora, the gap runs both ways. You may have grown up in Brussels or Birmingham, while your partner has never left Accra. So talk early about where you plan to live, about work and about the place of faith. If the “knocking” ceremony comes up, let each family explain its own customs.

However, a request for money “for the family” before you have even met remains a warning sign. Dating in Accra that leads somewhere grows with time, not urgency. Koeur24, a serious dating site founded in Brussels in 2024, works in French, English and Dutch. Sign-up is free and open to people aged 18 and over. Then move at your own pace: a message, a call, then a date.
