1Dating in Casablanca: What the Economic Capital Changes
Dating in Casablanca often fits around office hours, from Sidi Maârouf to the city centre. Casa, as most people call it, is Morocco's economic capital. The country's capital, however, is Rabat, further north along the coast. The port, the banks, company headquarters and private schools draw people here from every region. So many singles live far from their families, at least for a few years.
Our guide to dating in Morocco covers the whole country. Here, instead, we stay in Casablanca, from Maârif to the Corniche. It speaks first to Casablancans, whether born here or arrived from Fez, Agadir or Oujda for a job or a degree. It also helps Belgian Moroccans who come back for the summer. Europeans already seeing someone from Casa will find useful pointers too.
On the street and online, people switch constantly between Darija and French, sometimes Amazigh or English. So say early which language you feel comfortable in. Then spell out your plans: a khotba and engagement in time, a serious relationship with no deadline, or just a coffee to see. That way, dating in Casablanca starts on clear ground.
2Neighbourhoods for a First Date in Casablanca
The first drink is best taken in a crowded café, halfway between your two neighbourhoods. However, turn down any invitation to a flat or to a car parked on waste ground, however insistent the other person is. Dating in Casablanca stays relaxed when either of you can walk out to a taxi at any time.
Maârif is a practical choice, with shopping streets, terraces and a landmark everyone knows: the Twin Center towers. The Gauthier district, close to the centre, has plenty of tea rooms and small restaurants. Racine and Bourgogne, which are more residential, offer quieter spots. Further west, Anfa and its wide boulevards suit an early-evening drink.
In the centre, Boulevard Mohammed V and the Central Market keep their Art Deco façades. Those façades alone can start the conversation. Also, agree on a precise meeting point: a tram stop, a pharmacy, a visible shop sign. For everything else, our first-date advice carries over unchanged to dating in Casablanca.
3Daytime Outings: Hassan II, the Corniche and the Habous
The Hassan II Mosque, built partly over the ocean, is lovely for a walk across its esplanade. Guided tours of the interior are also open to non-Muslims. In that case, wear covering clothes and keep a low profile. Nearby, the El Hank lighthouse and the rocky shore catch beautiful light in the late afternoon.
Next, the Aïn Diab Corniche runs along the Atlantic, with cafés, ice-cream parlours and beach clubs. At weekends, the mood becomes more relaxed and family-friendly. At low tide, you can also see the Sidi Abderrahmane shrine on its tiny island. The Habous quarter, or new medina, is better for strolling between bookshops and pastry shops.
For culture, the Abderrahman Slaoui Museum shows vintage posters, jewellery and decorative objects in a villa in the centre. The Institut français de Casablanca also hosts concerts, films and talks. Finally, Arab League Park is a pleasant walk under the palm trees. Dating in Casablanca by daylight often reassures both people, especially the first time.
4Tram, Petits Taxis and Timing: Planning the Outing
To reach a date, the tram is a simple option. The Belgian FPS Foreign Affairs notes that comfortable trams serve part of Casablanca. Busway lines add to the network. So check the nearest stop before you choose the place.
Otherwise, red petits taxis run all over the city. The FPS advises checking that the meter is on and refusing a fixed-price ride. More generally, it recommends agreeing on the price of any service beforehand. In the evening, therefore, choose an official taxi that you hail yourself.
Timing matters too. On weekdays, many dates happen after work, in the early evening. During Ramadan, however, the city comes alive mainly after the fast is broken. The FPS also advises non-Muslims to avoid eating or drinking in public during that month. So when dating in Casablanca, match the time of each date to the other person's daily rhythm.
5Online from Casa: Moderated Site or WhatsApp Groups?
Online, dating in Casablanca starts with an honest profile. A photo taken on the Corniche last month beats a retouched portrait from years ago. Mention your area in broad terms, your languages and the place of religion in your life. For example: “Engineer in Sidi Maârouf, I speak Darija, French and English; I'm thinking of marriage, without rushing.”
WhatsApp, Telegram or Facebook groups may look like a shortcut for dating in Casablanca. Yet every member can see your Moroccan number, and your photo may end up forwarded from group to group. Moreover, nobody checks profiles or handles reports. Our article on WhatsApp dating groups describes these pitfalls in detail.
When choosing a site, focus on criteria instead. First, photo moderation. Next, a way to block and report a profile in a couple of taps. At Koeur24, software screens each photo before a moderator approves it by hand. The “Verified identity” badge comes from an optional identity check. Finally, the distance filter keeps your search within Greater Casablanca, while age and religion filters narrow the list.
After a few days of messages, move to video without leaving the app. You will soon see whether the face matches the photos. Your number, address and workplace, on the other hand, can wait until trust grows.
6Staying Safe While Dating in Casablanca
The Belgian FPS Foreign Affairs considers the crime rate in Morocco relatively low. Still, it reports thefts of handbags, wallets, jewellery and phones, as in other major tourist destinations. It especially advises women not to walk alone at night in outlying districts or poorly lit streets. In addition, it urges caution in isolated places, including beaches.
The FPS also recommends avoiding unusual crowds, notably near mosques on Fridays, near universities and near stadiums. Likewise, it calls for vigilance in places popular with Westerners. On the Corniche, therefore, prefer lively terraces to empty stretches of beach, especially at night.
Then there is money, where we make no compromise. Not a dirham, no phone credit, no Wafacash or Cash Plus transfer to someone you have never met in person. We could not verify an official Moroccan online reporting platform, so we do not name one. If you are scammed, keep your screenshots and receipts, then go to the local police. On the site where it all started, block and then report the profile.
- Set the first date in daytime, in a busy café
- Take a metered petit taxi or the tram, never a stranger's car
- Tell a friend the café's address, the time and the profile link
- Keep your bag, your drink and your phone close
- Say no to any request for dirhams, even a small sum
7Casablanca and Belgium: Distance, Visas and Consulates
Dating in Casablanca sometimes begins in summer, when families from Brussels or Antwerp return home. The relationship then continues at a distance. Video calls at set times, dated plans and visits prepared together keep it going. The FPS also points out that a Belgian who also holds Moroccan nationality is treated as Moroccan there.
Good to know: Belgium no longer has a consulate general in Casablanca. According to the Belgian Embassy in Morocco, it closed in July 2020, and its consular work moved to Rabat. Applicants lodge their visa requests with TLScontact, at 3 Boulevard Ghandi in Casablanca, or at the Rabat centre. However, student visas go only through TLScontact Rabat.
The embassy stresses that TLScontact plays no part in the decision, which rests with the Immigration Office. If a contact you have never met in person wants you to pay for “their TLS file” or “their ticket to Brussels”, say no. Procedures change often, and the embassy's visa page is the reference. On the Belgian side, travellers heading to Casa can register their stay on Travellers Online. Finally, the FPS advises against driving at night, notably between Casablanca and Rabat.
8Family, Engagement and the Legal Framework
In Casablanca, many couples see each other for a while before mentioning it at home. Even so, the family is rarely far away. In some homes, people expect a clear step: a visit from the parents, then an engagement. In others, you first meet a sister or a cousin. So ask your partner plainly how it usually goes in their family.
For a mixed couple, the legal side matters too. The Belgian Embassy explains that couples prepare a marriage in Morocco before the family court. On the Belgian side, the file includes a certificate of no impediment to marriage, which the embassy in Rabat issues. A Belgian-Moroccan dual national, however, does not need one. For a wedding in Belgium, the Moroccan fiancé or fiancée applies for a marriage visa at TLScontact in Casablanca. Finally, the FPS notes that sex outside marriage and same-sex relations are offences in Morocco.
Talk of a “dowry to advance” or “party costs” before you have even met should put you on guard. Dating in Casablanca that leads somewhere takes time. Koeur24, born in Brussels in 2024, aims to be a serious dating site, in French, English and Dutch. Registration is free from age 18. The rest comes step by step: a few messages, a video call, then mint tea in Gauthier.
