Dating in Lusaka: Kabulonga, Rhodes Park or Northmead for a first date, daytime outings, getting home before dark, mobile money, visas and family.

1Dating in Lusaka: what makes the capital different

Dating in Lusaka runs on one clock above all: sunset. In the Zambian capital, people work, study and socialise mostly in daylight. After dark, the streets thin out fast, and most people head home by car rather than on foot. So a first date here is usually an afternoon affair, with the ride home sorted in advance.

The country as a whole, with its languages and customs, has its own page in our guide to dating in Zambia. This one, by contrast, never leaves Lusaka and works through it area by area. It speaks to singles who live here: University of Zambia students, office workers on Cairo Road, NGO and UN agency staff. It also speaks to Zambians in England and elsewhere who fly home to spend December with family.

Lusaka also draws people from every province. Nyanja rules the streets, yet a colleague from the Copperbelt may speak Bemba, and a neighbour from the South may speak Tonga. As a result, dating in Lusaka often brings together two families with different roots. Talk about it early, with curiosity rather than assumptions.

2Kabulonga, Rhodes Park, Northmead: where to meet

East of the centre, Kabulonga and Rhodes Park are quiet, leafy residential areas. Their neighbourhood cafés and restaurants draw families and expats alike, which makes them a relaxed setting for a first coffee. Still, arrive by car or get a lift. Walking around alone, even by day, is something the Belgian FPS Foreign Affairs advises against.

Further south, Woodlands has easy spots for a weekday lunch, and so does Longacres, close to the government ministries. Northmead, north-east of the centre, comes alive in the evening around its restaurants. However, the FPS suggests keeping off the streets once the sun has gone down. For dating in Lusaka on that side of town, then, book lunch rather than dinner.

Near the university, Roma and Kalingalinga are full of students. Kalingalinga is a busy, working-class neighbourhood where people bump into each other all the time. Even so, a first date there works best kept short, in daylight, at a place you already know. Finally, when you drive, the FPS recommends a parking spot that is visible, busy and preferably watched.

3Daytime outings: galleries, parks and crafts

For a second date, head to the Showgrounds on Great East Road, home to the Henry Tayali Visual Arts Centre. The gallery shows Zambian painters and sculptors, so the conversation tends to flow on its own. Every year, the grounds also host the big agricultural and commercial show, with parades and stalls. Meanwhile, the Lusaka Playhouse stages amateur theatre in an intimate setting.

In Kabwata, the cultural village brings together artisans who carve, weave and sell their work. It is an easy place to wander as a couple around midday. South of the city, on the Kafue Road, Munda Wanga in Chilanga combines a botanical garden with an animal sanctuary. It makes for a calm outing, popular with families at weekends.

Finally, Lusaka National Park, on the south-eastern edge of the city, lets you spot giraffes, zebras and antelopes from the car. Bear in mind, though, that the FPS warns against remote places where you could easily be cut off. Save the park for later, once trust is there, or make it a group trip. Either way, be back before dark.

4Dating in Lusaka online: a profile that places you

Lusaka sprawls, and a trip along Great East Road can drag on at rush hour. So your profile should say which side of town you live on. "Woodlands, working near Cairo Road" is plenty, with no street name. State plainly, too, whether marriage is the goal, or a steady partner, or friendship to begin with. If church matters to you, whether Pentecostal, Catholic or Adventist, mention it: in Lusaka, that question comes up early.

As for photos, a sharp outdoor shot beats a heavily edited portrait. Before you travel anywhere, ask for a short video call in the app. That way you can check the person is real and actually lives in the area they mention. Be wary, on the other hand, of a self-styled Kabulonga resident who always finds a reason to switch the camera off. Your office and your phone number can wait until the second date.

Koeur24 offers three filters that make sense in Lusaka: distance, age and religion. The first, for example, saves someone in Northmead from crossing the whole city for a coffee. While trust is still growing, keep writing and calling, by audio or video, without leaving the app. Joining costs nothing and is open to adults aged 18 and over, with the site in English, French and Dutch. That way, dating in Lusaka gets time to grow.

5Facebook and WhatsApp groups in Lusaka: the catch

On Facebook, pages named after the city post singles' ads, then send people on to WhatsApp or Telegram. Getting in is instant. The catch shows up fast, though: every member sees your number, and a screenshot of your photo can travel anywhere. No moderator checks who is behind a nickname, and a complaint goes nowhere.

These spaces are also hunting grounds for scammers. They spot people who seem isolated, pile on the sweet talk, then invent a crisis: a bill at the University Teaching Hospital, a fine, a bus fare. All it takes, supposedly, is "just" one Airtel Money transfer. For dating in Lusaka, then, these groups expose you a lot and protect you very little. Our advice on WhatsApp dating groups goes through these traps.

A moderated platform cannot bring the risk down to zero. Still, it puts up barriers. At Koeur24, a photo only appears after an automatic check and a review by a real person. In addition, you can block or report an unwelcome profile straight away. Identity verification remains optional; even so, the "Identity verified" badge helps you decide whether to meet.

6Staying safe: cars, nightfall and money

According to the Belgian FPS Foreign Affairs, violent crime in Zambia is concentrated mainly in the capital. It describes carjackings by armed gangs, especially after sunset. In the car, it advises keeping the doors locked and the windows up, even while driving. It also says never to resist a robbery.

On the road, the FPS warns that a broken-down car can be a set-up, so do not stop for one. If an egg hits your windscreen, do not switch on the wipers. It also reports frequent street theft. Cairo Road and the streets around it, Kamwala market and Soweto Market are all very crowded. They are therefore no place for a first date: it is easy to lose each other, and valuables draw attention.

Minibuses and street taxis are how many residents get around. Even so, when dating in Lusaka, a driver you know or a friend dropping you off is more reassuring. Money is where you draw a hard line. Until you have met in person, send no kwacha, no airtime and no Airtel Money or MTN MoMo transfer. If a chat turns sour, the Zambia Police Service website lets you report a possible crime online. In an emergency, dial 991.

  • Meet in the early afternoon and head home before sunset
  • Leave the car somewhere visible, busy and preferably watched
  • Keep jewellery and expensive phones out of sight
  • Let a friend know the venue, the time and your date's name
  • No kwacha changes hands before you meet, not even for a ride

7From Lusaka to Brussels: distance, visas and VFS

Dating in Lusaka sometimes turns into a relationship with someone based in Brussels, Antwerp or Liège. Distance then needs anchors: a fixed evening for video calls, a visit pencilled into the calendar, a travel budget worked out together. Settle early on who travels and who covers what. And if you fly in from Europe, book your own accommodation rather than letting your match choose it.

For a short stay in Belgium, the Belgian embassy in Dar es Salaam points Zambian residents to an agreement with Sweden. The file itself goes in at the VFS Global centre in Lusaka. The Swedish embassy in Lusaka adds that it no longer processes these visas itself. Instead, the VFS centre forwards files to the Swedish embassy in Nairobi, and every applicant must attend in person.

A visa to marry in Belgium falls outside that agreement, however, as does any long stay. In those cases, the application goes in person to Dar es Salaam. The Swedish embassy also warns about people selling faster appointments or extra fees. So if anyone asks for kwacha to "speed up" a visa, they are lying. Stick to the official channels.

8Family in Lusaka: the first Sundays together

In Lusaka, many families keep strong ties to their home province. First introductions tend to be informal. It might be Sunday lunch after church, a visit to a cousin, or a video call with parents back in the village. In many families, an aunt or uncle also acts as an adviser, and later as a go-between if things get serious.

Expectations, however, differ a great deal between families. Some want to see the person within weeks; others hold back until marriage is clearly on the table. The safest move is to ask your partner what is usual among their relatives. Expect questions, too, about your job, your congregation and your plans.

In public, a little restraint is wise, especially at first. The Belgian FPS also points out that same-sex relationships are illegal in Zambia. Dating in Lusaka therefore moves step by step, from the first chat to the first Sunday with the family. Founded in Brussels in 2024, Koeur24 supports that journey from Europe and from Zambia alike.

Frequently asked questions

1Where should I go on a first date in Lusaka?
Pick a quiet café in Kabulonga, Rhodes Park or Woodlands in the early afternoon. Arrive by car or get a lift, since the Belgian FPS Foreign Affairs advises against walking alone, even in daylight. For a second date, the Henry Tayali Visual Arts Centre or the Kabwata cultural village make a more original setting.
2Is it OK to go out in the evening for a date in Lusaka?
Best not, at first. The Belgian FPS Foreign Affairs suggests keeping off the streets once the sun has set, and warns that carjackings happen especially after dark. Lunch or coffee in Woodlands or Kabulonga works better, with a driver lined up for the trip home.
3What should I do if I am scammed after dating in Lusaka?
Stop all payments, then save screenshots of the chat and the transaction numbers of any Airtel Money or MTN MoMo transfers. The Zambia Police Service website lets you report a possible crime online, and 991 is the emergency line. Finally, block and report the account on the platform where it first contacted you.
4Where does my partner in Lusaka apply for a Belgian visa?
For a short stay, in person at VFS Global in Lusaka, under a representation agreement with Sweden. The file then goes to the Swedish embassy in Nairobi. For a wedding in Belgium or a long stay, the application must be made in person in Dar es Salaam, following the Belgian embassy's procedure.
