Dating in Sierra Leone and Liberia: first dates in Freetown and Monrovia, Krio and English, the Orange Money rule, visas via Abidjan and family.

1Dating in Sierra Leone: Freetown, Bo, Makeni and Krio

Dating in Sierra Leone often starts with a small choice: English or Krio? English is the official language, used at school and in government offices. In the street, at the market and in many homes, however, Krio is what people share. Then come other languages, such as Temne or Mende, depending on where a family comes from.

Freetown, the capital, stretches between the Atlantic and green hills. People move there for work, for study or to join relatives. Bo is the main city of the south. Further north, Makeni is home to a university, among other things. So two people who meet in Freetown may well have grown up in very different regions.

This guide is for singles living in Sierra Leone, for the diaspora, and for Europeans already talking to someone in Freetown. It also covers neighbouring Liberia, where Monrovia has its own landmarks. In both countries, dating in Sierra Leone or Liberia works best when you are clear early on. Say whether you want a serious relationship, marriage, or friendship first.

2A first date in Freetown: where to meet

For a first date, pick a public place that is busy and easy to reach. A café, a restaurant or the lounge of a well-known hotel all work. On the other hand, turn down a private home or a quiet spot, even if the other person insists. Above all, each of you should be free to leave whenever you like.

In Freetown, the Aberdeen area and the Lumley Beach seafront have plenty of restaurants and terraces. Plan a beach walk in daylight, while people are around. Indeed, the Belgian FPS Foreign Affairs advises avoiding isolated areas after dark, beaches included. In the city centre, the Sierra Leone National Museum also makes a calm outing for two.

The FPS also notes that petty crime is concentrated in Freetown, especially in the east of the city. It advises against motorbike taxis and shared minibuses because of the accident risk. So book your ride there and back before you leave. If you fly into Lungi airport, across the estuary, the FPS recommends the Sea Coach or Sea Bird water taxis.

3Dating in Sierra Leone outside the capital: Bo and Makeni

Dating in Sierra Leone is not only a Freetown story. Many profiles come from Bo, Makeni or other inland towns. If you both live there, choose a busy place you already know, during the day. Then tell someone close to you where you are going and when you expect to be back.

For a visitor from Europe, though, things are different. The Belgian FPS Foreign Affairs strongly advises avoiding travel outside Freetown, as well as any travel at night. It also advises against the border area with Liberia and the Yenga area near Guinea. In that case, suggest meeting in Freetown, or start with a video call.

The FPS further asks travellers to avoid crowds and not to move around alone, at any time of day. Finally, it points out that same-sex relations are illegal in Sierra Leone.

  • Meet in a busy public place, ideally during the day
  • Book your ride both ways and skip motorbike taxis
  • Share the place, the time and the profile with someone you trust
  • Keep your phone charged and your drink within reach
  • Refuse any request for Orange Money or Afrimoney, however small

4Your online profile: English, Krio and first messages

Online, dating in Sierra Leone starts with an honest profile. Show your face in recent photos, without heavy filters. Next, mention your city, your languages and the place faith holds in your life. For example: "I live in Freetown, I speak English and Krio, and I'm looking for something serious."

A little Krio can make someone smile, as long as it feels natural. "Aw di bodi?" is a friendly way to ask how someone is doing. Still, don't stay in writing for weeks. After a few regular exchanges, suggest a video call. If the person keeps avoiding the camera with shifting excuses, treat it as a warning sign.

On Koeur24, distance, age and religion filters help you find profiles close to home. Messages and audio or video calls stay inside the app, so your phone number can wait. In addition, every photo goes through an automatic check and then a manual review. Identity verification is optional; however, it adds an "Identity verified" badge to your profile.

5Orange Money and Afrimoney: money and dating in Sierra Leone

According to the FPS, Orange and Africell cover Freetown and the larger towns. Their mobile wallets, Orange Money and Afrimoney, are part of daily life for paying, sending and receiving money. That convenience also attracts scammers.

So the rule has no exceptions: never send money, airtime or a mobile transfer to someone you have not met. The Belgian FPS Foreign Affairs reports that scams, in person and online, are common. They often promise a big gain in return for an immediate payment, or offer diamonds. Yet diamond exports are strictly regulated. Honest dating in Sierra Leone never needs a transfer. It also helps to learn how to spot a romance scam.

Sierra Leone's Ministry of Information has relayed the advice of the national cybersecurity coordinator: "Stop, Think, Verify." She mentions romance scams followed by blackmail over private photos. If in doubt, take screenshots and note the phone number and mobile money account. Then report it to the police, reachable on 900 according to its website, and to your network provider. Finally, block the profile and report it on the dating site.

6Liberia: Monrovia, Liberian English and staying alert

Next door in Liberia, English is also the official language. In daily life, however, many people speak a distinctive Liberian English, sometimes called Kolokwa. Monrovia, the capital, is where ministries, businesses and universities are based. According to the FPS, both the Liberian dollar and the US dollar are used there.

For a first date in Monrovia, choose a restaurant or the lounge of a reputable hotel with proper security, during the day. The Belgian FPS Foreign Affairs asks visitors to avoid West Point, Somalia Drive and Red Light, as well as the Omega and Douala markets. It also reports attacks on foreigners in Mamba Point and Sinkor. Criminals are active in nightclubs and on beaches too. Foreigners have also reported robberies in taxis, so arrange every trip in advance, airport included.

As for money, MTN and Orange both run mobile money services in Liberia. The rule is the same as for dating in Sierra Leone: no transfer to anyone you have never met. Moreover, we found no official Liberian online service for reporting fraud. Keep your evidence and go to the local police instead. Belgians can also contact the honorary consulate of Belgium in Monrovia.

7Diaspora and long distance: the visa goes through Abidjan

Dating in Sierra Leone can also begin at a distance. The Sierra Leonean diaspora lives notably in the United Kingdom, around London, while many Liberians have settled in the United States. Freetown and Monrovia run on GMT, so Brussels is one or two hours ahead depending on the season. Set regular video calls, then talk openly about who travels, when, and on what budget.

To visit Belgium, your partner deals with the Consulate General of Belgium in Abidjan. It is the only post handling applications from residents of Sierra Leone and Liberia. The application starts on VisaOnWeb and is then lodged with the service provider VFS Global. Applicants must appear in person, and the consulate advises applying at least four weeks before departure.

So be wary of anyone you have never met who asks for money to "unlock the visa". Rules change, so always check the consulate's website and that of the Belgian Immigration Office. Travelling the other way? Register your trip on Travellers Online, as the FPS recommends. According to the same source, Brussels Airlines flies from Brussels to Freetown.

8Family, put stop and customary marriage: moving forward with respect

Once dating in Sierra Leone turns serious, family comes into the picture sooner or later. Some families quickly invite you to share a meal. Others wait for a clear commitment, and an uncle, an aunt or an elder may be approached first. So ask your partner how things usually work in their family.

In Krio families in Freetown, the traditional engagement is often called "put stop". Elsewhere, in Sierra Leone as in Liberia, a customary marriage with a dowry or gifts to the family may come before, or alongside, a religious or civil wedding. However, customs vary from one community to another, and even between families. In Liberia, the FPS also notes that traditional practices remain widespread and suggests asking locals to avoid any faux pas.

On the other hand, a request for money "for the family" before you have even met remains a red flag. Koeur24, a serious dating site founded in Brussels in 2024, works in French, English and Dutch. Signing up is free and open to adults aged 18 and over. Then move at your own pace: a message, a call, and finally a date in a public place, in Freetown or in Belgium.

Frequently asked questions

1Where should I go for a first date in Freetown?
Pick a busy public place during the day: a restaurant in Aberdeen, a terrace on the Lumley Beach seafront or the Sierra Leone National Museum. The Belgian FPS Foreign Affairs advises avoiding beaches and isolated areas after dark, as well as motorbike taxis. Book your ride there and back.
2Can I send Orange Money to someone I met online?
Not while you have never met them in person. Nothing justifies an Orange Money, Afrimoney or MTN transfer, airtime or a bank payment to someone you only know online. Keep screenshots and transaction references, report it to the police and block the profile.
3Where do residents of Sierra Leone or Liberia apply for a Belgian visa?
The Consulate General of Belgium in Abidjan is the only post handling applications from residents of both countries. The form is filled in on VisaOnWeb, then lodged in person with the provider VFS Global, at least four weeks before departure. Always check the current rules on the consulate's website.
