1Dating in Kampala: Life Across the Hills
Dating in Kampala starts with the map. Uganda's capital sprawls over a chain of hills, with valleys in between where traffic quickly grinds to a halt. So a date between Ntinda and Kansanga can turn into a trek at rush hour. Each hill also has its own feel: official on Nakasero, residential in Bugolobi, studenty around Makerere.
Our guide to dating in Uganda covers the whole country, its languages and its traditions. Here, instead, we stay in Kampala, one hill at a time. This guide is for singles who live, study or work in the city, for instance at an NGO. It also helps Ugandans abroad who fly home for the holidays. And it is for Europeans already talking to someone from Kampala.
Either way, good dating in Kampala begins with one simple question: where do you each live? The answer often settles the place, the time and how you get there. That is why it is worth raising in your first few messages.
2Kololo, Ntinda, Bugolobi: Where to Meet First
Kololo and Nakasero are home to embassies, hotels and quiet restaurants. However, the Belgian FPS Foreign Affairs reports rising crime in these supposedly safe areas, as in Naguru. It also warns that attacks on places popular with expats remain possible in Kampala. So pick a low-key spot over the most prominent venue, and meet in daylight.
To the east, Ntinda and Bugolobi have simpler neighbourhood cafés. The Village Mall in Bugolobi, for example, lets you meet without crossing the whole city. Still, the FPS urges caution in shopping centres at busy times. Go for a weekday afternoon rather than a Saturday.
In the south, Muyenga and Kansanga come alive in the evening, especially along Ggaba Road. Yet the FPS advises against travelling at night. If you are dating in Kampala on that side of town, start early in the evening and head home before dark. Finally, skip the shisha lounges: according to the FPS, shisha is banned in Uganda, and so is smoking in public places.
3Daytime Dates, From the Hills to Lake Victoria
The historic hills make for a good day out together. On Old Kampala hill, you can visit the national mosque and climb its minaret for a view over the city. Namirembe has the Anglican cathedral, while Lubaga has the Catholic one. In addition, the National Theatre near Parliament hosts plays, concerts and crafts. Mind your camera, though: the FPS says photographing official or diplomatic buildings, and bridges, is forbidden.
In Muyenga, Tank Hill gives you a clear view towards Lake Victoria. Further south, Munyonyo has the Martyrs' Shrine, a Catholic pilgrimage site, as well as waterside terraces. Finally, Ggaba still has its fishermen's landing site, where people love grilled fish by the lake.
A boat ride often appeals to couples. Even so, the FPS points out that storms can blow up suddenly on the lake. Stay close to the shore and check the boat first. After all, dating in Kampala doesn't need an adventure to leave a good memory.
4Online Dating From Kampala
Online, give your hill or neighbourhood rather than your street. “I live in Bukoto and work in Nakasero” is enough to plan a realistic date. Also say what you are looking for and the role faith plays in your life. Then add recent daytime photos that show your face clearly.
After a few days of chatting, suggest a video call. It confirms that the person really lives in Kampala and looks like their photos. On the other hand, someone who claims to live in Kololo but always dodges the camera deserves your suspicion. Meanwhile, keep your workplace and phone number to yourself for now.
On Koeur24, filters for distance, age and religion help you find people near you, which also means shorter journeys. Messages and audio or video calls stay inside the app. Sign-up is free from age 18, in English, French or Dutch. That way, dating in Kampala can grow at your own pace before you ever meet.
5WhatsApp Groups or a Moderated Site?
In Kampala, links to dating groups get passed around on WhatsApp, Telegram and Facebook, sometimes among students. Joining takes one tap. However, your number is then visible to plenty of strangers, and a screenshot of your photo can end up in another group. Also, nobody checks profiles there or deals with your reports. For dating in Kampala, that is a lot of exposure for very little protection.
These groups are also a shop window for fraudsters. For example, an October 2026 statement from the Uganda Police Force describes a suspect who kept switching names, numbers and accounts. He took payments mainly through WhatsApp. Romance scams follow the same script: an attractive profile, an emergency, then silence. Our article on WhatsApp dating groups explains these risks in more detail.
A moderated site does not remove every risk, but it adds safeguards. On Koeur24, every photo goes through an automatic check and then a manual review. You can also block or report a profile. Finally, identity verification is optional, but the “Identity verified” badge is reassuring before you agree to meet.
6Safe Dating in Kampala: Getting Around and Money
The Belgian FPS Foreign Affairs describes high crime in and around Kampala, including violent robberies in broad daylight. It also reports people being drugged in bars or on public transport, then robbed. So on a first date, order your own drink and keep it close. If a crowd or a protest starts to gather, the FPS advises moving away quickly.
When it comes to transport, the FPS considers minibus taxis and boda-bodas dangerous. It also mentions foreigners robbed while riding motorbike taxis. An app such as SafeBoda books you a motorbike, but it is still a motorbike. Instead, book a car through an app such as Uber or Bolt, or use a driver you trust. And share your trip with someone close to you.
On money, the rule is absolute: never send money, airtime or an MTN MoMo or Airtel Money transfer to someone you haven't met. If you are scammed, keep the screenshots and transaction references. The Uganda Police Force asks victims of online fraud to report to Katwe Police Station or the nearest police station.
- Meet during the day, on a weekday, away from peak hours
- Book a car both ways rather than a boda-boda
- Order your own drink and keep an eye on it
- Share the place, time and profile with someone close to you
- Refuse any request for mobile money, even for a taxi fare
7Kampala and Europe: Long Distance and Visas
Sometimes dating in Kampala leads to a long-distance relationship with someone in Brussels. It then depends on fixed rituals: a video call at an agreed time, a planned visit, a shared budget. Talk early about who travels, when, and who pays. If you fly in from Europe, stay somewhere you chose yourself, not somewhere picked by your online match.
For Belgium, the Belgian embassy in Kampala has outsourced visa applications to TLScontact. The centre is on the ground floor of Block A, Victoria Courts, Old Kira Road, in Bukoto. Every applicant over 12 must attend in person for fingerprints and a photo. In Kampala, Belgium also handles visas for Luxembourg.
For a long stay, for instance after a wedding, the embassy lists two very local steps. The medical certificate can only come from The Clinic, at the Village Mall in Bugolobi. As for the certificate of good conduct, Interpol handles it on Katalima Road in Naguru. Finally, anyone asking for money to “speed up” a visa is lying to you: only the embassy and the Belgian Immigration Office decide.
8Meeting the Family, Kampala Style
In Kampala, many families keep one foot in the city and one in the village. So a first introduction often happens gently: a Sunday lunch, a visit to an aunt, a video call with parents who live upcountry. Only later, sometimes, comes the kwanjula or another ceremony, which our guide to Uganda describes.
Still, every family has its own customs. Some want to meet the person quickly, while others wait for a clear plan. So ask your partner how things work in their family. Also prepare for the likely questions: your job, your faith, your plans for the future.
In public, the FPS advises discretion and no displays of affection. It also points out that a law of 30 May 2023 harshly punishes same-sex relations. As a result, dating in Kampala is often low-key at first, and that is perfectly fine.
