Dating in Johannesburg: Sandton, Rosebank or Parkhurst for a first date, daytime outings, the Gautrain and Uber, safety, visas and meeting the family.

1Dating in Johannesburg: Life in a Fast-Moving City

Dating in Johannesburg moves at the pace of a busy metropolis. Johannesburg is South Africa's largest city, yet it is not the capital. Pretoria houses the government, while Cape Town hosts Parliament. Johannesburg, for its part, grew out of the 1886 gold rush. That is why people still call it Egoli, “the place of gold”, or simply Jozi.

Our guide to dating in South Africa covers the whole country. Here, however, we stay in Johannesburg, one neighbourhood at a time. The city draws people from every province and from neighbouring countries, mostly for work or study. As a result, many residents live far from their families. Others grew up here and know every on-ramp by heart.

This guide is mainly for singles who live in Joburg or are spending a few months here. It also helps returning members of the diaspora, and Europeans already talking to someone from the city. Either way, dating in Johannesburg goes better when you set out your intentions early. Serious relationship, marriage, or friendship first: say so. Then judge people by what they do, not by their postcode.

2Sandton, Rosebank and Parkhurst: Where to Meet

Johannesburg is a sprawling city built around the car. So the venue matters as much as the time. Pick a busy public place where each of you can arrive and leave independently. For dating in Johannesburg, the malls and restaurant streets of the northern suburbs offer exactly that.

Sandton, the business district, suits an after-work drink. Its Gautrain station and Sandton City mall are landmarks everyone knows. Rosebank feels more relaxed, with galleries and cafés along the Keyes Art Mile. Parkhurst, meanwhile, keeps a village feel around 4th Avenue, with its pavement terraces and small shops.

A word about Melville, often recommended for its 7th Street. The Belgian FPS Foreign Affairs urges extra vigilance there because of a high risk of violent assault. We therefore do not suggest it for a first date. Likewise, the FPS advises against Hillbrow, Berea, Yeoville and Alexandra, the township next to Sandton. Also, our first date tips apply here too.

3Braamfontein, Newtown and Soweto: Daytime Outings

A daytime outing often puts both people at ease. Braamfontein, the student quarter around the University of the Witwatersrand, has plenty of cafés and galleries. However, it borders Hillbrow. So come during the day, by Uber, and leave the same way. The Nelson Mandela Bridge then links Braamfontein to Newtown.

Newtown is, in fact, the only part of the old centre that the FPS excludes from its warning. It advises avoiding the rest of the centre at night and at weekends, along with the area around the bus station. Further south, the Apartheid Museum is worth an unhurried visit together. Dating in Johannesburg sometimes benefits from an outing like this, because it opens up a deeper conversation.

Finally, Soweto draws many visitors. Vilakazi Street is home to the former houses of Nelson Mandela and Desmond Tutu. Even so, the FPS recommends sticking to tours organised by an agency, or to those two houses and the Hector Pieterson Museum. Keep Soweto for a guided trip later on, then. For a picnic, try Zoo Lake or the Botanical Garden in Emmarentia instead, on a weekend when people are around.

4Online Dating in Johannesburg: Mind the Distance

Online, dating in Johannesburg often comes down to kilometres. Between Soweto and Midrand, or Roodepoort and Sandton, a trip can drag on at rush hour. That is why Koeur24's distance filter helps you avoid falling for someone on the far side of the metro. The age and religion filters then narrow things down further.

Your profile, meanwhile, works best when it is honest and specific. Recent photos, a clearly visible face and one clear sentence are enough. For example: “I work in Sandton, I live in Randburg and I'm looking for something serious.” Share your suburb, never your street address. Likewise, keep your employer's name for later.

After a few days of steady messages, move on to video. One call usually shows whether the person matches their photos. Koeur24's messaging and audio or video calls also stay inside the app. Therefore, you only hand out your number once trust has grown. On the other hand, a camera that is always “broken” deserves your suspicion.

5Moderated Site or WhatsApp, Telegram and Facebook Groups?

“Joburg singles” groups are everywhere on WhatsApp, Telegram and Facebook. They look like a shortcut for dating in Johannesburg. However, your number or profile becomes visible to strangers. A screenshot of your photo can then travel far beyond the group.

What's more, nobody checks identities there, and no team handles your reports. Some private messages quickly pitch a crypto “investment” or a job that sounds too good to be true. That is often how a scam begins. We cover these risks in detail in our article on WhatsApp dating groups.

So how do you choose a dating site in Johannesburg? Forget the league tables and look at how it works. First, photo moderation. Next, a block and report button that is easy to find. On Koeur24, every photo goes through an automatic check and then a manual review. Finally, identity verification is optional, but it adds an “Identity verified” badge.

6Safe Dating in Johannesburg: Advice From the FPS

The Belgian FPS Foreign Affairs advises caution in South Africa. Still, it notes that most visitors have no particular problems. In Johannesburg, its advice focuses mainly on getting around. Never walk alone, and certainly not after dark. According to the FPS, the Gautrain is safe during the day. In the evening, then, use Uber, booked only through the app, or a radio taxi called by phone.

The FPS also gives very practical tips. Memorise the car's number plate and model before you step outside, so your phone stays in your pocket on the street. Withdraw cash during the day, in a busy shopping centre. In a car, keep bags and phones out of sight, because smash-and-grab at traffic lights is common. Finally, once you have parked, try the handle to make sure the door has actually locked.

As for money, there are no exceptions, not even for a small amount. Never send cash, airtime or a bank transfer to someone you have not met. If you fall victim to fraud, go to the nearest South African Police Service (SAPS) station, or dial 10111 in an emergency. Reporting a crime costs nothing, and you receive a CAS case number.

  • For dating in Johannesburg, choose a busy public place, ideally in daylight
  • Book Uber in the app, never with a driver who approaches you
  • Share the place, time and profile with someone close
  • Keep your drink and your phone within reach
  • Refuse any request for money or airtime before you have met

7Johannesburg and Brussels: Distance, Visas and TLScontact

Dating in Johannesburg can also start at a distance, with a member of the diaspora or a European. The bond then rests on regular video dates and concrete plans. Johannesburg shares Brussels time in summer and runs an hour ahead in winter. So evening calls stay easy. Also talk early about who travels, when, and on what budget.

To visit Belgium, your partner first fills in the online VisaOnWeb form. For Gauteng residents, the Belgian embassy in Pretoria then points to TLScontact in Centurion, Durban or Bloemfontein. The Centurion centre sits on the second floor of Lakeside 3, 263A West Avenue, in Die Hoewes. TLScontact adds that “Johannesburg” and “Centurion” refer to the same centre. Once in Belgium, visitors must declare their presence online within three days.

If someone you have never seen asks for money for “the visa” or “the ticket”, stop there. A genuine application goes through VisaOnWeb and TLScontact, never through a middleman. If you travel from Belgium, register your trip on Travellers Online. The FPS also recommends an airport transfer arranged by your hotel. Lastly, it lists a consular emergency number for Johannesburg and Pretoria: +27 82 458 8026.

8Family and Introductions, Jozi Style

In Johannesburg, family often lives somewhere else. Many residents have parents in another province, or even in a neighbouring country. Introducing someone to your people can therefore mean a trip, sometimes over the end-of-year holidays. Other families live locally and gather everyone around a Sunday lunch.

Every family keeps its own customs. Some quickly welcome a new face. Others wait for a clear commitment, such as an engagement and the lobola talks that our country guide explains. Faith matters to many people as well, and the city has churches, mosques, synagogues and Hindu temples. The simplest approach, then, is to ask your partner how things work in their family.

On the other hand, if someone asks for money “for the parents” before you have even met, be wary. Serious dating in Johannesburg takes its time. Koeur24 is a serious dating site, founded in Brussels in 2024 and available in French, English and Dutch. Signing up is free, from the age of 18. Then each of you moves at your own pace: a message, a video call, then coffee in Rosebank.

Frequently asked questions

1Where should I go on a first date in Johannesburg?
Pick a busy public place that is easy for both of you to reach: a drink in Sandton, a café along the Keyes Art Mile in Rosebank, or a terrace on 4th Avenue in Parkhurst. The Belgian FPS Foreign Affairs urges extra vigilance in Melville and advises against Hillbrow, Berea, Yeoville and Alexandra.
2Can I visit Soweto with someone I met online?
Better later, and with a guide. The FPS recommends sticking to agency-organised tours, or to the Mandela and Tutu houses on Vilakazi Street and the Hector Pieterson Museum. For a first date, choose a neighbourhood in the north of the city.
3How do I get home after an evening date in Johannesburg?
The FPS describes the Gautrain as safe during the day. In the evening, book Uber only through the app, or call a radio taxi. It advises against minibus taxis, hailing cabs in the street and walking alone after dark.
4Where does a partner from Johannesburg apply for a Belgian visa?
After completing the VisaOnWeb form, they book an appointment at TLScontact in Centurion (Lakeside 3, 263A West Avenue), the centre the Belgian embassy in Pretoria lists for Gauteng. Never send money to a middleman, and check the rules on the embassy website.
