Dating in Dar es Salaam: first-date spots in Masaki, Oyster Bay or Mikocheni, daytime outings to Coco Beach and the Slipway, safe travel, visas and family.

1Dating in Dar es Salaam: Life on the Indian Ocean

Dating in Dar es Salaam is often a race against the clock. Tanzania's largest city stretches along the Indian Ocean, and its roads clog up fast at rush hour. Yet it isn't the capital: the official seat of government is Dodoma. Instead, Dar is the country's main port and its commercial heart. Students, office workers and expats all end up here.

Our guide to dating in Tanzania covers the whole country, its languages and its traditions. Here, instead, we stay in Dar, one neighbourhood at a time. This guide is for singles who live, study or work in the city, for instance at an NGO. It also helps Tanzanians abroad who fly home for the holidays. And it is for Europeans already talking to someone from Dar.

The weather matters too. During the heavy rains, the Belgian FPS Foreign Affairs notes that traffic sometimes stops altogether because of poor drainage. So dating in Dar es Salaam means building in some slack. A text saying “I'm stuck in Mwenge” is usually not an excuse.

2Masaki, Oyster Bay, Mikocheni: Where to Meet First

Masaki and Oyster Bay are packed with cafés, restaurants and expat homes, especially along Haile Selassie Road. However, the Belgian FPS Foreign Affairs reports real crime in Dar es Salaam, even on the Msasani peninsula. Violent burglaries happen there regularly. So these areas work for lunch in a busy spot, never for a visit to either person's home.

The FPS also describes a heightened terrorist threat in Tanzania, particularly in Dar es Salaam. It urges vigilance in places popular with foreigners: hotels, restaurants, nightclubs and shopping centres. As a result, pick a low-key venue over the most prominent terrace, and early afternoon over late evening.

Further north, Mikocheni and Mwenge have neighbourhood cafés that suit anyone living near Sinza or the university. Students from Mlimani often meet up there. Kariakoo, by contrast, is the crowded market district downtown. The FPS advises visiting markets with care, preferably not alone. It also says to avoid them after sunset. In short, dating in Dar es Salaam doesn't start in the Kariakoo crush.

3Coco Beach, the Slipway and the Waterfront by Day

Along Toure Drive, Coco Beach draws families at the weekend, with vendors grilling mishkaki and cassava. For dating in Dar es Salaam outdoors, it is lively and cheap. Still, the FPS recommends caution on beaches, with no jewellery or phone on show. It also advises leaving before dark. So come in the afternoon, and head off as the light fades.

On Msasani Bay, the Slipway brings together craft shops, restaurants and a sunset view. Boats also leave from there for Bongoyo Island, for a day of swimming. That makes an easy second date. Even so, stay alert: a shopping complex popular with foreigners is exactly the kind of place where the FPS asks for vigilance.

Downtown, the Kivukoni waterfront is lined by St Joseph's Cathedral and the Azania Front Lutheran Church. The fish market is just round the corner. Meanwhile, the Magogoni ferry crosses over to the beaches of Kigamboni. Mind your camera, though: the FPS points out that photographing bridges and public buildings is forbidden. So the striking Tanzanite Bridge stays out of your photos.

4Online Dating From Dar es Salaam

Online, dating in Dar es Salaam starts with a clear profile. Give your neighbourhood rather than your street. “I live in Sinza and work in Posta” is enough to plan a realistic date. Also mention your languages, whether Swahili, English or French, and the role faith plays in your life. In Dar, mosques and churches stand side by side, and many singles want to know early where the other person stands.

Then suggest a video call after a few days of chatting. It confirms that the person really lives in Dar and looks like their photos. On the other hand, someone who claims to live in Masaki but always dodges the camera deserves your suspicion. Also keep your workplace to yourself for now.

On Koeur24, filters for distance, age and religion help you find people nearby. That way, you avoid crossing the city at rush hour. Messages and audio or video calls stay inside the app. Sign-up is free from age 18, in English, French or Dutch. So dating in Dar es Salaam can grow at your own pace before the first coffee.

5WhatsApp Groups or a Moderated Site?

In Dar es Salaam, links to dating groups get passed around on WhatsApp, Telegram and Facebook, often mixed in with party listings. Joining takes one tap. However, your number is then visible to hundreds of strangers, and your photo can end up anywhere. Also, nobody checks profiles there or deals with your reports.

These groups are fertile ground for fraudsters too. The script rarely changes: an attractive profile, an emergency, then a request for a transfer. Our article on WhatsApp dating groups explains these risks in more detail. In Tanzania, TZ-CERT sits within the communications regulator. It offers an online form to report fraud or social engineering.

A moderated site does not remove every risk, but it adds safeguards. On Koeur24, every photo goes through an automatic check and then a manual review. You can block or report a profile at any time. Finally, identity verification is optional, but the “Identity verified” badge is reassuring before dating in Dar es Salaam turns into a real meeting.

6Safe Dating in Dar es Salaam: Getting Around and Money

On the street, the Belgian FPS Foreign Affairs reports bag snatching from passing cars and motorbikes. It therefore advises walking against the traffic, away from the road, with your bag on the building side. If you are attacked, it recommends not resisting. It also warns of pickpockets at bus stations such as Ubungo and at ferry terminals.

For getting around, the FPS advises against daladalas, bajajis and bodabodas. It strongly advises against taking a bajaj after dark, especially for women on their own. Avoid unlicensed taxis or cabs that already carry passengers. Instead, the FPS prefers a taxi booked through your hotel or recommended by someone you trust. The DART rapid buses, which many locals call mwendokasi, run along Morogoro Road; use them by day, with your phone tucked away.

The FPS also asks travellers to avoid all public gatherings. Indeed, protests remain possible around symbolic dates, such as the anniversary of the 29 October 2025 elections. On money, the rule is absolute: never send money, airtime or a mobile transfer to someone you haven't met. That goes for M-Pesa, Airtel Money and Mixx by Yas alike. Genuine dating in Dar es Salaam never needs a transfer.

  • Meet during the day, somewhere busy in Masaki, Mikocheni or Mwenge
  • Book a trusted taxi both ways, and never take a bajaj at night
  • Carry your bag on the building side and leave jewellery at home
  • Share the place, time and profile with someone close to you
  • Refuse any M-Pesa request, even for a taxi fare

7Dar es Salaam and Europe: Long Distance and Visas

Sometimes dating in Dar es Salaam leads to a relationship with someone in Brussels or Antwerp. It then depends on fixed rituals: a video call at an agreed time, a planned visit, a shared budget. If you fly in from Europe, stay somewhere you chose yourself. The FPS also notes that “Inbound Travel Insurance” has been compulsory for visitors since 1 October 2026.

A weekend in Zanzibar tempts many couples. The FPS notes that more modern ferries now serve the islands. On the other hand, it warns about traditional dhows, which sometimes sail in bad weather. So save that trip for later, once trust is already there.

For the other direction, the Belgian embassy at 5 Barack Obama Road handles visas for Tanzanians. It covers Belgium, Austria and Luxembourg. Applicants book an appointment, then hand in their file in person at the VFS centre in Dar es Salaam. Complete files go to the embassy the same day. Finally, the embassy warns about fraudulent websites and asks applicants not to make any online payments.

8Meeting the Family, Dar Style

In Dar, many families are spread across several neighbourhoods, or even several regions. So a first introduction is often low-key. It might be a Sunday lunch in Sinza or a visit to an aunt in Mbezi. Sometimes it is just a video call with parents back in Moshi. The more formal steps, described in our guide to Tanzania, come later.

In the city, a wedding often brings together a kamati, a committee of friends and relatives. It collects the michango, everyone's contributions. These collections often run through WhatsApp and mobile money. That is why you should be wary of a stranger asking you to “chip in” for the wedding of someone you met online.

Still, every family has its own customs. So ask your partner how things work in their family. In addition, the FPS points out that same-sex relations are illegal in Tanzania. As a result, dating in Dar es Salaam is often discreet at first, and that is perfectly fine.
