Dating in Somalia and across the diaspora: honest profiles, video calls, family and clan, the meher, hawala and EVC Plus scams, and visas via Nairobi.

1Dating in Somalia: who this guide is for

Today, dating in Somalia mostly starts online, and very often across borders. Somali is the language that ties families at home to relatives abroad, while Arabic keeps an official and religious role. Mogadishu, the capital, stretches along the Indian Ocean coast. Further north, Hargeisa is the main city of Somaliland.

This guide speaks first to Somali singles who live in the country. It also speaks to the diaspora, notably in the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Belgium, Scandinavia and the United States. Finally, it is for couples who met at a distance, for instance after a family wedding watched on a video call.

One point matters from the start. The Belgian FPS Foreign Affairs advises against all travel to and within Somalia. So this guide suggests no date and no trip there. Instead, it shows how dating in Somalia, or with someone from the diaspora, can move forward without needless risk.

2Why we suggest no meeting there: the FPS advice

In its update of 28 September 2026, the Belgian FPS Foreign Affairs advises against all travel to and within the country. It describes a poor and unpredictable security situation across the whole territory. According to the FPS, the threat of attacks and kidnapping remains very high, notably in Mogadishu. Attacks have targeted hotels, restaurants and markets. For dating in Somalia, that rules out any plan to travel.

Somaliland is no exception. The FPS does rate the situation there as better than in the centre and south, yet still fragile. It also advises against Hargeisa, Berbera and the road between them, unless there is a compelling reason. Moreover, Belgium has no diplomatic or consular post in Somalia. Instead, the Belgian embassy in Nairobi covers the country.

The FPS adds two warnings for the diaspora. First, Somali residents of Belgium need a valid travel document for the return, because a Somali passport is not accepted for it. Second, young people raised in Europe may face a forced marriage arranged by relatives once they arrive. Finally, the FPS notes that homosexuality is illegal there and carries the death penalty.

3Somali diaspora: meet where you actually live

Since travel is off the table, the first date happens in the country where you live. So, in practice, dating in Somalia often links two European cities, or Europe and North America. Somali communities live in London, Amsterdam, Antwerp, Stockholm, Oslo and Minnesota, among other places.

When dating in Somalia moves offline in Europe, pick a public, busy and neutral place: a café, a tea house, a city-centre library. If the other person practises Islam, suggest an alcohol-free venue straight away. Then make your own way there and back. Also tell a friend where you are going and when you expect to be home.

Language matters too. Parents often speak Somali at home, while their children switch to Dutch, Swedish or English. Somali also has several varieties, including Maay, which is more common in the south. So simply ask which language the other person prefers for the conversations that really count.

4Dating in Somalia online: a clear profile and early video calls

Online, dating in Somalia begins with an honest profile. Use recent, sharp photos without misleading filters. Mention the city you live in, your languages and the place faith holds in your daily life. Above all, state your intention: marriage, a serious relationship, or friendship first. For example: "I live in Antwerp, I work in logistics and I hope to marry within a few years."

An early video call saves months of guesswork. You see a face, hear a voice and recognise a room. So a match who postpones that call every week with a fresh excuse deserves caution. The time difference is small, too: Mogadishu is one to two hours ahead of Brussels, depending on the season.

For dating in Somalia or abroad, the Koeur24 distance, age and religion filters help you find compatible profiles. Messages and audio or video calls stay inside the app, so your phone number stays private for now. Every photo also goes through an automatic check and then a manual review. Finally, optional identity verification adds a "Verified identity" badge to your profile.

  • Hold the first date in the city where you live, never in Somalia
  • Suggest a video call before you get attached
  • Keep the conversation inside the app at first
  • Turn down any request for money, hawala or an EVC Plus transfer
  • Raise the meher and family questions once things get serious

5Faith, family and clan: moving forward with respect

For many Somalis, Islam shapes daily life and the idea of marriage. Talking early about your practice therefore avoids misunderstandings: prayer, Ramadan, the headscarf, how to raise children. However, practice differs from one family to the next, at home and in Europe alike. Assume nothing and ask with tact.

When dating in Somalia, family also carries real weight. A brother, an uncle or a mother may want to speak with you before any promise is made. In some families, clan belonging, or qabiil, still plays a part in choosing a spouse. In others, especially among young people in the diaspora, it matters far less. So discuss it openly, without judging where the other person stands.

One rule is not up for debate: marriage rests on the free consent of both people. Indeed, the Belgian FPS Foreign Affairs reports young people taken to Somalia by relatives, then stripped of their papers or forced to marry. If you fear such a situation, talk to someone you trust before any departure. Sincere dating in Somalia never needs pressure.

6The meher: raise it early, and with nuance

In an Islamic marriage, the meher, or mahr, is a gift from the husband to the wife. It belongs to her personally. Its amount and form vary widely: a symbolic sum, gold, property, sometimes a deferred commitment. Each family has a view, yet the bride-to-be has the first say.

Whether you are dating in Somalia or in the diaspora, raise the topic once the relationship is serious, not on the first call. First compare your expectations calmly. Then involve both families, if you both want that. Also think about a civil marriage where you live: in Belgium, your local municipality explains the steps.

Be careful, though: the meher never justifies a payment before you have met in person. A profile asking for an advance on the dowry, "negotiation" fees or money for relatives is following a well-worn scam script. The dowry is a matter for families who know each other, never for a stranger online.

7Hawala and EVC Plus: the money rule has no exceptions

Money transfers are woven into Somali life. Hawala, or xawaalad, lets the diaspora send money to relatives through transfer agencies. At home, EVC Plus mobile money is part of everyday life, as is Zaad in Somaliland. The FPS also notes that credit cards are not accepted in the country.

That familiarity makes some scammers very persuasive. They mention a hospital bill, overdue rent, a plane ticket or visa fees. Yet the rule is the same for everyone: no cash, no phone credit, no EVC Plus or hawala transfer to someone you have never met face to face. A video call is not enough. Honest dating in Somalia never depends on a transfer. Our guide to romance scams walks through these stories.

If you think you are a victim, keep screenshots and the reference of every transfer. In Somalia, SOMCIRT works under the National Communications Authority. It presents itself as the official contact point for reporting cyber incidents. In the diaspora, go to the police where you live instead. Then block the profile and report it on the site where you met.

8Visas for Belgium: the route runs through Nairobi

If dating in Somalia turns into a real plan, the visit happens in Belgium, never there. The Belgian embassy in Nairobi covers Somalia. According to the embassy, short-stay and long-stay applicants appear in person at TLScontact in Nairobi. Before that appointment, they complete the online form on VisaOnWeb.

Since 10 July 2026, the European Union has applied visa sanctions to Somalia. In practice, the embassy states a standard processing time of 45 days and no multiple-entry visas. It also turns down any application lodged less than 45 days before departure. Meanwhile, Somali citizens living in Kenya, Uganda or Ethiopia file family reunification requests in Nairobi.

The embassy mentions no paid service that shortens this delay. So be wary of anyone selling a "fast" visa. Rules change often, therefore reread the embassy page before each application. For diaspora couples, dating in Somalia from afar usually leads to a meeting in Europe, so read our first date tips.

Frequently asked questions

1Can I plan a first date in Somalia?
No. The Belgian FPS Foreign Affairs advises against all travel to and within the country, and against Hargeisa and Berbera unless there is a compelling reason. Get to know each other online and by video call first. Then meet in a public place in the city where one of you lives.
2How do I bring up clan and the meher without causing offence?
Wait until the relationship is serious. Ask what each of you, and each family, expects, without judging. Qabiil matters a great deal to some families and very little to others. The meher is a gift to the bride, and its amount is agreed between families who know each other, never with a stranger.
3What if a match asks for an EVC Plus or hawala transfer?
Say no, even for a small amount. Never send money, credit or a transfer to someone you have not met. Keep screenshots, block the profile and report it. In Somalia, SOMCIRT is the official contact point for cyber incidents; elsewhere, contact the police where you live.
4Where does a partner living in Somalia apply for a Belgian visa?
The Belgian embassy in Nairobi covers Somalia. Your partner appears in person at TLScontact in Nairobi after filling in the VisaOnWeb form. Since 10 July 2026, standard processing takes 45 days, and applications lodged less than 45 days before departure are not accepted.
