1Dating in Tanzania: Two Languages, Four Key Cities
Dating in Tanzania often starts in Kiswahili, even when the chat itself is in English. Kiswahili is the shared language across the whole country. English, meanwhile, dominates in universities, business and some offices. So a single message can mix “mambo” and “how are you” without anyone raising an eyebrow.
Four cities keep coming up in conversation. Dar es Salaam, on the Indian Ocean, is still the big commercial city and the main port. Dodoma, in the centre, is the official capital and now hosts the government. Up north, Arusha sits at the foot of Mount Meru. Finally, the Zanzibar archipelago has its own government and more conservative customs.
This guide is first for singles who live in Tanzania. It is also for the Tanzanian diaspora, notably in the UK, the United States, Oman and Belgium. Finally, it is for Belgians already talking to someone from Dar es Salaam or Zanzibar. In every case, dating in Tanzania goes better when both of you say early on what you are looking for.
2First Dates in Dar es Salaam: Simple, Busy Places
In Dar es Salaam, traffic often decides what time you meet. So pick a place that suits both journeys, rather than a smart address on the far side of town. A café, a family restaurant or a large mall is plenty. For example, Mlimani City, near the University of Dar es Salaam, has shops, restaurants and a cinema under one roof.
For a quieter afternoon, the National Museum near the Botanical Gardens is a good visit for two. The Village Museum at Makumbusho also shows traditional houses from several regions. Both give you something to talk about straight away. However, say no to a hotel room, someone's home or an empty beach on a first date.
Also, the Belgian FPS Foreign Affairs reports a heightened terrorist threat, notably in Dar es Salaam. It therefore asks visitors to stay alert in places popular with foreigners, such as restaurants and shopping centres. It also advises against wearing flashy jewellery or carrying a bag on the traffic side. Then, our first date tips cover the rest of the basics.
3Dodoma and Arusha: Meeting Away From the Coast
Dodoma draws more and more civil servants, students and the families who move with them. Life there often feels calmer than in Dar es Salaam. Lunch near the centre, then a walk around Nyerere Square, makes an easy first date. In addition, the FPS mentions the new railway between Dar es Salaam and Dodoma, opened in 2024 and considered reliable.
That train makes a real difference for a couple a few hundred kilometres apart. Thus dating in Tanzania between the coast and the capital can now fit into a weekend. Still, book your tickets ahead and travel by day. Indeed, the FPS advises against driving at night unless it is strictly necessary.
In Arusha, the clock tower is the usual landmark in the city centre. The Arusha Declaration Museum offers a short visit on the country's history. However, the FPS reports violent incidents in Arusha, as in other cities. So stay on busy streets and head home before dark.
4Zanzibar: Dating in Tanzania With Respect for Local Ways
Zanzibar does not share all the codes of the mainland. Most people on the islands are Muslim. The Belgian FPS Foreign Affairs therefore recommends clothes that cover shoulders and knees outside tourist hotels. Dating in Tanzania on the archipelago also works best when you stay discreet in public.
During Ramadan, many families shift their meal and outing times. In that case, suggest meeting after the fast is broken, somewhere lively. Then simply ask the other person what suits them. That small question shows respect, without pretending to be an expert on a culture that is not yours.
In Stone Town, Forodhani Gardens fill up in the early evening. Still, the FPS notes that clashes have taken place in Stone Town in the past. It therefore urges great caution and asks visitors to avoid any demonstration. Finally, it advises care on beaches and dark streets, especially after sunset.
5Staying Safe: What the Belgian FPS Advises
The Belgian FPS Foreign Affairs considers Tanzania generally low in security problems. However, it flags specific risks. Since the violence that followed the elections of 29 October 2025, it asks visitors to avoid all public gatherings. It also advises against non-essential travel near the Mozambique border, in the Mtwara region.
Likewise, it calls for particular caution in the Kigoma region, near Burundi. No date is worth meeting in those areas. In town, the FPS advises against daladalas, bajajis and bodabodas. Instead, it prefers a taxi booked through a hotel or recommended by someone you trust.
According to the same FPS page, same-sex relationships are illegal in Tanzania, Zanzibar included. Finally, if you travel from Belgium, register your trip on Travellers Online.
- Meet during the day, in a busy public place
- Arrange a trusted taxi before you leave, and another one home
- Text a friend the venue, the time and a link to the profile
- Keep your phone and your drink close to you
- Never send money or a mobile transfer to someone you have not met
6M-Pesa and Mixx by Yas: the Money Rule Never Changes
In Tanzania, people often pay by phone with M-Pesa, Airtel Money or Mixx by Yas, formerly Tigo Pesa. It is handy for a taxi or the shopping. Yet that convenience helps scammers too. Sincere dating in Tanzania never needs a transfer to move forward.
So the rule is absolute: no money, airtime or mobile transfer to anyone you have not met. The excuses vary: a hospital bill, school fees, a bus ticket to Dar es Salaam. The request itself never changes. Also, learn to spot a romance scam, because the scripts look alike from one country to the next.
If you think you are a victim, keep your screenshots and transaction references. In Tanzania, TZ-CERT, part of the Tanzania Communications Regulatory Authority (TCRA), offers a “Report Incident” form. That form includes “Fraud” as a subject. Then block that profile and report it on Koeur24 or whichever site you used.
7Long Distance: Diaspora, Video Calls and Visas
Many stories begin between Brussels and Dar es Salaam, or between London and Arusha. First, an honest profile helps: recent photos, the languages you speak, the place of faith, your plans. Next, suggest a video call early. If someone keeps refusing the camera, treat it as a warning sign. Fortunately, the time difference with Belgium is only one to two hours.
On Koeur24, the distance, age and religion filters help you focus on dating in Tanzania or within the diaspora. Messaging and audio and video calls stay inside the app. So you can keep your number to yourself for now. Also, a photo only goes live after an automatic check followed by a manual review. Finally, members who choose to verify their identity get an “Identity verified” badge.
For a stay in Belgium, the Belgian Embassy in Dar es Salaam handles visa applications from Tanzanians. Applicants file in person at the VFS centre, by appointment. The embassy also warns about fraudulent websites and asks people not to make any online payment. In the other direction, the FPS says an “Inbound Travel Insurance” policy has been compulsory since 1 October 2026.
8Mahari and Family: Dating in Tanzania Takes Time
In many Tanzanian families, marriage remains a matter between two families. Often the groom's side first makes contact through a go-between or a letter. Talks about mahari, the bride price given to the bride's family, come next. In Muslim families, by contrast, the mahr goes to the bride herself.
These customs vary by region, by religion and from one family to another. Some hold a “send-off” for the bride or a “kitchen party” among women. Others prefer a simple ceremony. So ask your partner, with curiosity and without assumptions. If anyone asks for money “for the family” before you have even met, say no.
Born in Brussels in 2024, Koeur24 is a serious dating site available in French, English and Dutch. Creating a profile costs nothing, and members must be at least 18. Blocking and reporting are available at any time. That way, dating in Tanzania can move at its own pace: a message, a call, then a date.
