1Dating in Botswana: Gaborone, Francistown and Maun
Dating in Botswana often starts with a warm "Dumela". In Setswana, people add "mma" when greeting a woman and "rra" when greeting a man. Setswana is the national language, while English remains the official one. As a result, many couples switch between the two without thinking. Around Francistown, you will also hear Ikalanga.
Gaborone, the capital, is home to government ministries, the main university and many company offices. Francistown, in the north-east, has long been a trading hub on the road to Zimbabwe. Maun, meanwhile, is the gateway to the Okavango Delta. Each town therefore has its own pace and its own idea of a night out.
This guide speaks first to singles who live in the country. It also speaks to the diaspora, for example in South Africa, the United Kingdom or Belgium. Later on, a second part covers neighbouring Namibia, from Windhoek to Walvis Bay. In both countries, one habit pays off: say early whether you want a serious relationship, marriage, or friendship first.
2A first date in Gaborone: easy, busy public places
For a first date, pick somewhere public, busy and easy to reach. In Gaborone, Riverwalk Mall and Game City both have cafés, restaurants and a cinema. The Main Mall, a pedestrian strip in the old centre, also works well for a quick lunch. That way, each of you arrives alone and leaves whenever you like.
If you prefer culture, the National Museum and Art Gallery makes an easy hour or two together. Nearby, the Three Dikgosi Monument honours Khama III, Sebele I and Bathoen I. In 1895, these chiefs travelled to London to argue for their land's future. So dating in Botswana can come with a ready-made conversation topic.
However, the Belgian FPS Foreign Affairs reports rising crime in the main urban centres, Gaborone included. It advises against carrying valuables or large amounts of cash. It also recommends avoiding walking alone after dark. On the other hand, it considers taxis in the larger towns generally safe. Just agree on the fare before you get in.
3Beyond the capital: Francistown and Maun
In Francistown, the Supa Ngwao Museum covers the history and crafts of the region. It makes a relaxed setting for dating in Botswana outside the capital. In addition, the FPS notes that a night train links Gaborone and Francistown. Some long-distance couples use it to meet up at weekends.
Maun moves to the rhythm of safaris and the Thamalakane River. A riverside coffee or a visit to the Nhabe Museum is plenty for a first meeting. That said, the FPS advises against swimming in lakes and rivers, because of bacteria and wildlife. In the parks, it also recommends an experienced guide and warns against leaving the vehicle without permission.
One practical point matters for couples who mostly text. According to the FPS, most lodges in the Okavango and Chobe areas lie outside mobile network coverage. If your match works in tourism, a few days of silence are therefore nothing unusual. Instead, agree in advance on the days when you can call.
4Patlo and bogadi: family when dating in Botswana
Once things get serious, family usually steps in. In many Tswana families, marriage begins with "patlo". The word describes the visit in which the groom's relatives formally ask for the bride's hand. Uncles and elders often lead these talks.
Next, in some families, comes "bogadi". This is a gift from the groom's family to the bride's family, traditionally counted in cattle. Yet the practice varies widely. Some families still give livestock, others give money, and others keep it symbolic. Many couples also add a civil or church wedding.
Before you meet the parents, ask your partner how things work in their family. Assume nothing and ask with respect. By contrast, a request for "bogadi money" from someone you have never met is a clear warning sign. Real families settle these matters between elders, face to face. They never ask a stranger for a transfer.
5Orange Money, MyZaka, Smega: the money rule
In Botswana, people often pay by phone with Orange Money, Mascom's MyZaka or BTC's Smega. These services make life easier, but they make scams easier too. So the rule has no exceptions. Never send money, airtime or a mobile transfer to someone you have not met in person.
The stories change all the time: a hospital bill, school fees, a parcel stuck at customs. Still, honest dating in Botswana never needs a payment to move forward. Also be wary of a profile that always refuses video calls or rushes to leave the site's chat. To spot the usual scripts, learn how to recognise a romance scam.
If you suspect a scam, keep screenshots and every transaction reference. The Botswana Police Service has a Cyber Forensics Branch that investigates online fraud and offensive electronic communication. In an emergency, the police answer on 999. Then block the profile and report it on the site where you met.
- Meet in a busy mall or café, in daylight
- Agree on the taxi fare before you get in
- Tell a friend where you are going, when, and with whom
- Refuse any request for money, even through Orange Money or MyZaka
6Dating in Namibia: Windhoek, Swakopmund, Walvis Bay
After dating in Botswana, many couples end up crossing into Namibia at some point. Windhoek, the capital, spreads across hills in the centre of the country. On Independence Avenue, the Christuskirche and the Independence Memorial Museum are easy daytime visits. For coffee or a meal, Maerua Mall and Grove Mall are lively and easy to find.
On the coast, Swakopmund keeps buildings from the German colonial era and a long jetty facing the Atlantic. Walvis Bay, about half an hour's drive south, sits on a lagoon where flamingos are a common sight. A daytime walk there gives you a calm setting to get to know each other.
Even so, the Belgian FPS Foreign Affairs reports more thefts and assaults, especially in Windhoek and Swakopmund. It says not to walk around after dark, above all alone. It also advises against visiting townships without a guide or someone who knows the area. Finally, it recommends avoiding taxis, especially ones already carrying other passengers. If you need one, use only taxis accredited by the Namibian Bus and Taxi Association.
7Namibia's languages: from Oshiwambo to Afrikaans
English is Namibia's only official language. In daily life, though, many other languages take over. Oshiwambo dominates in the north. Afrikaans works as a common language in many towns, and German can still be heard in Windhoek and Swakopmund. Otjiherero and Khoekhoegowab, a click language, matter too.
Afrikaans grew out of the Dutch spoken at the Cape in the 17th century. Speakers of Dutch or Flemish can therefore follow part of it, especially in writing. That shared vocabulary can help a Namibian and a Belgian partner break the ice.
As for money, the FPS notes that the Namibian dollar is tied to the South African rand. Shops also accept the rand. Mobile wallets such as FNB's eWallet are common. The same rule applies as for dating in Botswana: no transfers to anyone you have not seen in person. Moreover, we found no official Namibian online platform where individuals can report a romance scam. The FPS points victims to the local police station.
8Long-distance dating in Botswana: profile, calls and visas
Online, dating in Botswana or Namibia starts with an honest profile. Use recent photos and say clearly what you are looking for. On Koeur24, distance, age and religion filters help you narrow your search. Every photo goes through an automatic check and then a manual review. Identity verification is optional, but it earns an "Identity verified" badge.
Messages and audio or video calls stay inside the app, so you can keep your number private for now. The time difference with Brussels is small: none in summer, one hour in winter. Evening calls are therefore easy to plan.
For a visit to Belgium, note that Belgium has no embassy in either country. From Botswana, applications fall under the Belgian embassy in Pretoria and go through TLScontact in Centurion, Durban or Bloemfontein. From Namibia, they fall under the Cape Town jurisdiction, through TLScontact in Cape Town or Gqeberha. In both cases, the VisaOnWeb form comes first. Koeur24, founded in Brussels in 2024, is free to join for adults aged 18 and over, in English, French and Dutch.
