1Dating in Malawi: two languages, three regions
Dating in Malawi often starts with a small choice: English or Chichewa? English runs through government offices, universities and most workplaces. Chichewa, however, carries everyday life across the Central and Southern regions. In the north, you will also hear a lot of Tumbuka.
The country is long and narrow, and the lake runs along much of its eastern edge. Lilongwe, the capital, sits in the Central Region. Blantyre, in the south, is still the main business city. Zomba, the old capital, keeps its plateau and its university town feel. Further north, Mzuzu acts as the hub for the whole region.
This guide is first for singles who live in Malawi. It is also for the Malawian diaspora and for Europeans already talking to someone from Lilongwe or Blantyre. In every case, say early what you want. That way, you both know whether this is about a serious relationship, marriage or friendship first.
2A first date in Lilongwe: Old Town and busy places
In Lilongwe, Old Town is an easy place to start. The older part of the city mixes markets, cafés, banks and small restaurants. North of the centre, Gateway Mall also has shops and quieter tables. For a daytime outing, the Lilongwe Wildlife Centre, a sanctuary for rescued wild animals, sits right inside the city.
So pick a public spot that you can reach and leave on your own. On the other hand, turn down any invitation to a home or a hotel room the first time you meet. Also, arrange your own transport and tell a friend when you expect to be back.
The Belgian FPS Foreign Affairs points out that visitors can be targets for thieves and con artists. It advises care in traditional markets, on dark streets and in isolated or crowded areas. It also suggests leaving jewellery, watches and eye-catching bags at home. Finally, the same source notes that same-sex relationships are illegal in Malawi.
3Blantyre and Zomba: meeting in the south
Blantyre has several good options for a daytime date. Mandala House, one of the oldest buildings in the country, houses a café and an art gallery. Nearby, St Michael and All Angels Church draws anyone who likes old brickwork. In Chichiri, the shopping mall and the Museum of Malawi round out the list.
Zomba is smaller and moves at a gentler pace. Its large covered market gets busy early in the morning. Meanwhile, Zomba Plateau rises above the town with forest trails and viewpoints. Still, keep that trip for later, with someone you have already met, and come down well before dark.
The Belgian FPS Foreign Affairs asks for extra vigilance around Mount Mulanje, after attacks on foreigners there in 2017. This guide therefore does not suggest it as a meeting place. The FPS also advises against driving at night, since most roads have no lighting. So if dating in Malawi means travelling between cities, plan the trip in daylight.
4Lake Malawi as a couple: after a few dates, not before
Lake Malawi stretches along much of the country's eastern side. In the south, Cape Maclear lies within Lake Malawi National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Senga Bay, near Salima, is within reach of Lilongwe. Up north, Nkhata Bay has the feel of a small harbour town.
However, a lakeside weekend is not a first meeting. Save it for when dating in Malawi has turned into something steady, and you know the other person and their circle. Then book your own room and keep enough money to get home alone.
The Belgian FPS Foreign Affairs urges caution on the beaches of Lake Malawi. It also mentions good bus services out of Lilongwe, while warning that serious bus accidents do sometimes happen. As for local customs, it recommends modest clothing, even at the beach. Also, never photograph people without their consent, as the same source advises.
5Your profile and first messages: moni, zikomo and honesty
Online, dating in Malawi works best with a clear profile. Add recent photos that show your face well. Mention your city, your languages, the role faith plays in your life and what you are looking for. For example: "I live in Blantyre, I teach, and I want something serious."
A few words of Chichewa usually go down well. "Moni" means hello, "Muli bwanji?" asks how someone is, and "Zikomo" means thank you. Still, use them to show interest, not as a pick-up trick: sincerity matters more than your accent.
On Koeur24, distance, age and religion filters help you find profiles near you. Messaging and audio or video calls stay inside the app, so your number stays private. Every photo goes through an automatic check and then a manual review. In addition, optional ID verification adds a "Verified identity" badge. If someone keeps refusing a video call, treat that as a warning sign.
6Airtel Money and TNM Mpamba: no advances, ever
In Malawi, Airtel Money and TNM Mpamba let people send money from any basic phone. The Belgian FPS Foreign Affairs also notes that cash remains the most common way to pay. Still, the ease of mobile money appeals to scammers too.
So the rule is the same for everyone. Never send money, airtime or an Airtel Money or Mpamba transfer to someone you have not met in person. The stories change: school fees, rent, a bus ticket, a stolen phone. Yet honest dating in Malawi moves forward without a single transfer. To spot these scripts early, learn how to recognise a romance scam.
If something feels wrong, keep your screenshots and transaction references. In Malawi, mwCERT, the national computer emergency response team, takes reports by email or through an online form. That form even lists a "Mobile Money Scam/Fraud" category. Then block the profile and report it on the site where you met.
- Set the first date in a public place, during the day
- Tell a friend where you are going, when, and who you are meeting
- Avoid driving between cities at night
- Refuse any request for Airtel Money, Mpamba or airtime
- Keep the evidence and report fraud to mwCERT
7Matrilineal and patrilineal families: ask before you assume
Family rules differ from one region and community to another. In much of the Central and Southern regions, many families trace descent through the mother. A maternal uncle may then have a real say in big decisions. In some villages, the husband even moves to his wife's home village, a practice known as chikamwini.
In the north, by contrast, patrilineal descent is more common, notably among the Tumbuka. There, bride wealth, called lobola or malowolo, often matters a great deal. Yet these patterns never tell the whole story. In town, many couples blend customs, and every family makes its own choices.
Before meeting the family, ask your partner how things work in their home. Who should you meet first? Will ankhoswe, the relatives who guide a couple and speak for each family, be involved? Questions like these show respect. On the other hand, a request for money "for the family" before you have even met is a red flag.
8Dating in Malawi across borders: diaspora, visas and Belgium
Dating in Malawi can also happen at a distance, with someone from the diaspora in South Africa, the United Kingdom or Belgium. The time gap with Brussels is small: one hour in winter, none in summer. So set regular calls and talk early about who travels, and when.
For a short stay in Belgium, the Belgian Embassy in Dar es Salaam, which covers Malawi, makes one point clear. In Malawi, Norway represents Belgium for short-stay visas, and applications go through VFS Global in Lilongwe. However, some visa types fall outside that agreement, including visas to marry or to sign a partnership contract. Those follow the long-stay procedure, filed in person in Dar es Salaam.
The embassy also warns about fake visa websites and asks applicants not to pay online. Rules change, so always check its website first. Koeur24, a serious dating site founded in Brussels in 2024, works in French, English and Dutch. Signing up is free and open to adults aged 18 and over.
