1Dating in the Comoros: Three Islands, One Country
Dating in the Comoros often starts with a simple question: which island are you from? The Union of the Comoros brings together three islands, Grande Comore, Anjouan and Mohéli. Each one has its own pace, its own villages and its own way of speaking. In Comorian, they are Ngazidja, Ndzuani and Mwali.
The country has three official languages: Comorian, also called Shikomori, French and Arabic. Shikomori also shifts from island to island. People speak Shingazidja on Grande Comore, Shindzuani on Anjouan and Shimwali on Mohéli. So two Comorians from different islands sometimes switch to French to be sure they understand each other.
Moroni, the capital, sits on Grande Comore. Mutsamudu is the main town on Anjouan, and Fomboni on Mohéli. Mayotte, a neighbouring island under French administration, is not covered in this guide. Finally, this guide is also for the Comorian diaspora and for Europeans already talking to someone in Moroni.
2A First Date in Moroni: Public Places and Local Manners
For a first date, pick a busy public place that is easy to reach. A tea room, a restaurant or a terrace works perfectly well. However, say no to someone's home or a hotel room, even if the other person insists. Dating in the Comoros feels easier when each of you can leave whenever you want.
In Moroni, the old harbour and the Old Friday Mosque are a setting everyone knows. A walk along the seafront in the late afternoon lets you talk without pressure. The Volo Volo market is also worth a visit in daylight. Still, the Belgian FPS Foreign Affairs advises against carrying valuables at the market or on the beach.
A few local customs matter, too. The FPS notes that most people are practising Muslims and recommends modest clothing, especially during Ramadan. Also, drinking alcohol in public can lead to a fine. So a fresh juice or a cup of tea is the better choice. Finally, never photograph anyone without their consent.
3Anjouan and Mohéli: Dating Across the Islands
Dating in the Comoros sometimes links two islands. On Anjouan, Mutsamudu keeps its old medina and the citadel that overlooks the town. Domoni, on the east coast, also has an old stone quarter. Higher up, Lake Dzialandzé draws hikers. For that kind of outing, the FPS advises going as a group and telling someone close.
Mohéli is the smallest of the three islands. Fomboni is a quiet town, and Mohéli National Park protects part of the coastline. Even so, a first meeting in daylight, somewhere busy, remains the best option. Later on, you can plan a trip together with mutual friends.
When dating in the Comoros means crossing between islands, the FPS strongly advises against overcrowded ferries. It also warns against the small motorboats known as kwassa-kwassa. In addition, it says it cannot assess the safety of domestic airlines. Finally, it expects above-average rainfall in late 2026, which may disrupt travel.
4Your Profile: Shikomori, French or Arabic
Online, dating in the Comoros starts with an honest profile. Choose recent photos that clearly show your face. Say which island you live on, what you are looking for and the place faith has in your life. Mention your languages as well, for example: “I speak Shingazidja, French and a little Arabic.”
Then, do not stay in writing for weeks. After a few regular chats, suggest a video call. Admittedly, the FPS reports slow internet connections and little Wi-Fi in hotels. So an occasional dropped call is normal. However, someone who always refuses the camera, with changing excuses, is showing a warning sign.
For dating in the Comoros, the distance, age and religion filters on Koeur24 help you narrow your search. Messaging and audio or video calls stay inside the app, so you can keep your number private at first. Also, every photo goes through an automatic check and then a manual review. Finally, identity verification is optional and gives you an “Identity verified” badge.
5Safe Dating in the Comoros: What the Belgian FPS Says
The Belgian FPS Foreign Affairs says there is little crime in the Comoros. Even so, it recommends a few precautions. Avoid carrying valuables, large sums of cash or your travel documents, especially at markets, in parks and on the beach. Also, do not walk around alone at night.
The FPS also asks travellers to avoid demonstrations and crowded places, because clashes can break out. It adds that Karthala, the volcano on Grande Comore, is still active. On the roads, it considers driving dangerous, especially after dark. So dating in the Comoros means planning the journey as well: book a taxi there and back.
Finally, the FPS states that homosexuality is illegal and punishable by law in the Comoros. As for reporting online scams, we found no official Comorian service available online. Therefore, keep your screenshots, block the profile and report it on the site where you met.
- Meet in a busy public place, ideally during the day
- Book a taxi for the journey there and back
- Share the place, time and profile with someone close
- Keep your phone charged and your bag close to you
- Go as a group for any sea or mountain outing
6Huri Money and MVola: The Money Rule, No Exceptions
The FPS notes that most payments in the Comoros are made in cash. Meanwhile, mobile money is spreading: Comores Telecom offers Huri Money and Yas Comores offers MVola. These services make transfers very fast. That is exactly why the rule never bends: no money, no phone credit and no mobile transfer to someone you have not met.
The excuses change, but the pattern stays the same. For instance, a plane ticket between islands, a hospital bill, a phone top-up or a contribution to a family wedding. Sometimes, it is an urgent visa fee instead. In every case, a request for money before you meet is a warning sign.
Sincere dating in the Comoros does not need your wallet. If someone insists, guilt-trips you or threatens to cut contact, stop the conversation. Then block the profile and report it in the app. Serious people understand this caution, and many of them apply it too.
7The Diaspora, Marseille and Long-Distance Love
The Comorian diaspora has a strong presence in France, notably in Marseille and the Paris region. As a result, many couples get to know each other at a distance, between Moroni and a European city. Summer trips home, often tied to family celebrations, then give them a chance to meet. In this way, dating in the Comoros can begin online and become real during the holidays.
To make distance work, set regular calls and be honest about your plans. The FPS points out that roaming with a Belgian operator is not possible in the Comoros. So plan on a local SIM card or Wi-Fi to stay in touch. Above all, meet in person before any major decision.
For a visa to Belgium, the list published by the FPS in September 2026 names the Belgian embassy in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. For a short stay, France represents Belgium in Moroni. The same list mentions VFS Global in Dar es Salaam. However, the rules change, so check dofi.ibz.be before taking any step.
8The Grand Marriage, Family and Building a Future
On Grande Comore, the grand marriage, or anda, holds a special place. This costly celebration runs over several days. It also brings a new social standing within the village. Yet it is not a required step for two people to love each other. Many couples first marry with a simpler religious ceremony, sometimes called the small marriage.
The custom is debated within Comorian society itself, mainly because of what it costs. Practices also vary by island, by village and by family. In some families, the house traditionally goes to the daughter, and the husband moves into her home. So ask your questions respectfully, without assuming anything.
Before meeting the family, ask your partner how things work in their home. Dating in the Comoros that truly matters takes time. Koeur24, a serious dating site founded in Brussels in 2024, works in French, English and Dutch. Signing up is free and open to adults aged 18 and over.
